On September 11, Hainan International College convened a special meeting on academic English teaching in Room 207 of the Public Experimental Building. Chaired by Mr. Guanghui DONG from the College Teaching Management Team, the meeting was attended by Ms. Siyu CHEN and all faculty members of the Chinese and foreign academic English teaching team. The meeting focused on in-depth discussions covering teaching standardization, classroom discipline, students’ English competency cultivation, teaching quality evaluation, and teaching code of conduct. It aims to unify work understanding, clarify operational requirements, and ensure the steady and orderly delivery of academic English teaching for the current semester.
The meeting emphasized that classroom teaching serves as the primary platform for talent cultivation, and academic English courses constitute a core link for students to adapt to academic studies at overseas partner institutions. All teaching faculty shall strictly abide by the university regulations and rules, including the Undergraduate Classroom Teaching Management Measures of Northeast Forestry University and the Administrative Provisions on Class Adjustment and Suspension for Undergraduate Programs of Northeast Forestry University, strictly comply with teaching standards, and jointly maintain a stable and well-ordered teaching environment.
In terms of teaching standardization, the meeting stressed that all instructors shall arrive at the classroom ten minutes in advance to complete pre-class preparations, commence classes on schedule, and refrain from early dismissal, class overtime, and unexcused absence. As the primary persons responsible for classroom teaching, instructors shall effectively administer student attendance, maintain classroom order, provide timely education and guidance to students with absenteeism or disciplinary violations, and report relevant issues to the College in a timely manner.
The meeting clarified the official regulations on class adjustment and suspension, and required standardized management of teaching documents. All courses shall be delivered in strict accordance with the teaching syllabus and academic calendar. Teaching materials including teaching plans, courseware, assignments and periodic assessments shall be fully archived to ensure standardized classroom teaching and rigorous value orientation in instruction. Meanwhile, the meeting delivered specific work guidelines to foreign teachers, helping them fully understand and accurately implement all teaching management requirements.
In terms of students’ English proficiency development, the meeting proposed that academic English teaching should be tailored to students’ learning conditions and adopt stratified teaching strategies, focusing on two core priorities: preparation for the College English Test Band 4 and the improvement of students’ comprehensive academic English competence. Classroom instruction shall integrate basic language training covering vocabulary, reading and listening, while prioritizing the cultivation of core academic capabilities including abstract writing, academic presentation, literature reading and academic discussion. It is essential to innovate classroom teaching modes, strengthen language output, and create more interactive and scenario-based learning environments. Teaching activities shall increase group discussions and thematic presentations, assign after-class tasks in a reasonable manner, and conduct continuous follow-up and feedback. Targeted guidance and support shall be provided in a timely manner for students with weak foundational skills. Furthermore, academic English courses shall lay a solid foundation for students’ subsequent study of full-English and bilingual professional courses. While improving students’ language proficiency, the courses shall cultivate their awareness of academic norms, guide students to get familiar with international academic standards, and foster a strong sense of academic integrity.
The meeting arranged the implementation of the university’s four-dimensional teaching quality evaluation system. It clarified that the College will normalize classroom observation and inspection arrangements, organize peer observation and evaluation within the academic English teaching team, and promote classroom demonstration and pedagogical exchanges between Chinese and foreign teachers. The meeting emphasized that evaluation is not an end in itself. The core goal is to drive teaching improvement through evaluation and continuously optimize the construction of academic English courses.
The meeting also specified arrangements concerning morning self-study and in-class quizzes. The College Teaching Management Office stated that it will fully guarantee teaching operations and provide comprehensive support for teachers in terms of teaching venues, academic procedures and student learning status. The office will also offer targeted guidance and explanations to foreign teachers regarding institutional regulations and academic workflow inquiries.
The meeting further unified the understanding of the Chinese and foreign teaching teams and clarified the working priorities and standardized requirements for academic English teaching in this semester. At present, all academic English teaching work of the College is being carried out in an orderly manner as scheduled.
