On the morning of January 13, Qin Chenghai, a 1998 alumnus of the School of Foreign Languages, Northeast Forestry University, Party Secretary of the School of Foreign Languages, Hainan University, and Vice Chairman of the Hainan Provincial University Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee, was invited to the Lingshui Li’an International Education Innovation Pilot Zone to deliver the 104th lecture of the “Donglin Alumni Lecture Series”. With the theme of Seizing New Opportunities in the New Era and Realizing Personal Value in Serving the Nation, he presented a special lecture for members of the study and practice camp and over 400 teachers and students attending online.
During the lecture, combining the national major strategic layout with the construction practice of Hainan Free Trade Port, Qin Chenghai systematically analyzed the development directions and paths for young people in the new era. He elaborated on the strategic significance of Hainan Free Trade Port as a national pilot field for high-level opening-up, and vividly interpreted its unique development advantages from the three dimensions of favorable timing, advantageous geographical location and harmonious human resources. He delivered an in-depth introduction to core policies including zero tariff, low tax rate and simplified taxation system, as well as institutional innovations featuring five major freedoms and conveniences plus secure and orderly data flow. He pointed out that the industrial layout of the Free Trade Port in seed industry, marine economy, aerospace, green energy, digital economy and other fields will provide a broad development platform for talents of all kinds.
In his sharing, starting from the historical mission of universities in the new era, Qin Chenghai introduced the vivid practices of Northeast Forestry University and Hainan University in serving national strategies at different development stages, and interpreted the contemporary value of the Saihanba Spirit embodied by faculty and students of Northeast Forestry University through practical actions. He encouraged young students to embrace the new era of high-level opening-up with a broader global vision and firmer strategic resolve, proactively align themselves with the needs of national opening-up and Hainan Free Trade Port construction, identify their life positioning and fulfill their youthful responsibilities while serving national strategies and regional development.
Closely keeping pace with the times and featuring vivid cases, the lecture resonated strongly among all participating students. Tong Lin'ao, a 2024 master’s student majoring in Logistics Engineering and Management from the College of Civil Engineering and Transportation, stated that the lecture enabled her to gain a more systematic understanding of the profound transformations in the logistics and supply chain system under the policy framework of the Hainan Free Trade Port. In particular, the driving effect of the “zero-tariff” policy on cross-border logistics and green low-carbon development has offered profound insights for her academic study and future career development. Liang Zongsheng, a 2023 undergraduate student majoring in Biotechnology from the Olin College, mentioned that the lecture helped him further recognize that the construction of the Free Trade Port not only delivers policy dividends but also creates vital opportunities for participating in institutional innovation and industrial reform. He noted that he would adopt a more pragmatic attitude to enhance comprehensive capabilities in future studies and contribute youthful efforts to ecological civilization construction and regional development.
As an important component of the themed study and practice camp titled “Sailing with Free Trade, Striving with Youth”, the lecture provided camp participants with a valuable opportunity to communicate with outstanding alumni and deepened students’ understanding of Free Trade Port construction and national strategies. Going forward, Hainan International College will continue to leverage its role as a bridge and platform, establish a regular mechanism for alumni connection and talent cultivation, and carry out diverse and substantive learning and exchange activities. The College will guide students of Northeast Forestry University to broaden their horizons, engage in practical practice, and compose brilliant youthful chapters in serving national development and the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port.
